Zest of the West

Ethereal landscapes, rugged coastlines, beachlife and Marsala wine are just some of the reasons for visiting western Sicily.  Low-cost flights into Palermo and Trapani are two more.  Take a look at the six-page feature devoted to Sicily in Ryanair’s autumn issue.

African Flavours in Sicily

Read a review in the Independent of Sarah Merson’s visit to Sicily.  Couscous, coconuts from Tunis and the Casbah at Mazara del Vallo, reminiscent of a North African souk, all serve as constant reminders of the island’s history and geographical location.  But, discovers Sarah, the Sicilian approach to life, their welcoming and hospitable nature and love of lengthy siestas, also play a part.

Half-term client news

Check out what some of our clients are offering this half-term.  Whether you’re in search of sun or surf, October half-term is a great time to get away and re-charge your batteries before the winter.

Hit the surf in Cornwall where the Sands Resort is offering free wetsuit, surf and bodyboard hire.  Get kitted out with wetsuits and boards at the hotel’s Surf Shack then head for the surfing favourites of Fistral Beach and Watergate Bay.  For those who prefer to stay on dry land, there’s everything from age-banded children’s clubs, masses of outdoor space filled with adventure play areas, football nets and a climbing wall, to that all-important Spa.

Or grab the last of the sun’s rays on a half-term break in Sicily.  Temperatures are still in their early 20’s, with up to six hours of sunshine a day and the island’s cultural attractions are relatively crowd-free.

Villas available with specialist soloSicily include The Queen’s Jewels near Taormina.  Stay in a cottage (sleep 4-8) with a large shared pool and views over lemon and olive tree-filled gardens and buy citrus fruits, olive oil, jam and eggs  from the farm.  Spend your days trekking or mountain-biking at the nearby Alcantara Gorge, thrill the kids with a trip up Mount Etna or head for the very chic Taormina for some retail therapy and a very large ‘gelato’.

soloSicily in the Express

Take a look at Sarah Merson’s review of soloSicily’s Villa Mariuccia in the Daily Express.

‘The three terraces were decked out with BBQ and wood-burning pizza oven and various sitting and dining areas surrounded by colourful flower beds.  Beyond that, the oak and olive trees offered privacy and shade.  Inside, the children delighted at the snooker room, table tennis table and Playstation.’

Head for the hills

Read Lisa Allardice’s review in the Guardian of a recent trip to Sicily.  Staying in the less well-trodden Madonie Mountains, she discovered a world away from the ‘seaside whiff of Ambre Solaire and the noisy glitter of beachfront bars’ but one in which she found herself as much ‘in the world of the Finzi-Continis as the Corleones’.

New don in town

‘Visit Sicily if you want a real sense of being in a foreign country … the landscape is both spectacular and unique. Great peaks soar from fertile plains and all around Corleone rock pinnacles jut out from the soil like the bones of some long-dead great beast …’

Patricia Kane‘s recent trip to Corleone with soloSicily gave her a real taste for Sicily’s art, fine food, wine and conversation.
